Detailed Grammar notes:
Processing keyword: ~편이다 [pyeonida] (It is preferable)
Expressing tendencies or general characteristics is a common necessity in everyday conversations. In Korean, the grammar point ~편이다 is used to indicate that something leans toward a certain quality or is relatively so. It translates to "tend to," "rather," or "somewhat" in English.
~편이다 is used to express that someone or something is generally or relatively of a certain quality. It softens statements, indicating that while not absolute, there is a tendency or inclination towards that characteristic.
Attach ~편이다 to the verb stem according to the following rules:
Verb Stem Ending | Suffix | Example Verb | Modified Form |
---|---|---|---|
Ends with a vowel or 'ㄹ' | -ㄴ 편이다 | 크다 (to be big) | 크ㄴ 편이다 |
Ends with a consonant | -은 편이다 | 작다 (to be small) | 작은 편이다 |
All Verb Stems | Suffix | Example Verb | Modified Form |
---|---|---|---|
Any ending | -는 편이다 | 자다 (to sleep) | 자는 편이다 |
In Korean culture, modesty and humility are valued traits. Using ~편이다 allows speakers to describe themselves or others in a way that is less direct or absolute, which is considered polite and modest.
