~것 같다 [geot gatda] (Seems like)

Expresses the speaker's guess or inference about a situation based on some evidence.

Formation

Verb/Adjective stem + (으)ㄴ/는 + 것 같(아요)

Examples

나는 오늘 아침부터 배가 아파. 아마 매운 음식을 먹어서 아픈 것 같아요.

Naneun oneul achimbuteo baega apa. Ama maeun eumsigeul meogeoseo apeun geot gatayo.

I've had a stomachache since this morning. It seems like it's because I ate spicy food.

그녀가 갑자기 분위기가 달라진 것 같아요. 무슨 일이 있었는지 아는 사람이 없어요.

Geunyeoga gapjagi bunwigiga dallajin geot gatayo. Museun iri isseossneunji aneun sarami eopseoyo.

She seems to have suddenly changed her mood. No one knows what happened.

어제 비가 왔는데 오늘은 반짝반짝한 것 같아요.

Eoje biga watneunde oneureun banjjak banjjakhan geot gatayo.

It rained yesterday, but today it seems to be sparkling.

밖에 사람들이 없는 것 같아요. 모두 어디로 갔는지 모르겠어요.

Bakke saramdeuli eomneun geot gatayo. Modu eodiro gassneunji moreugesseoyo.

It seems like there's no one outside. I don't know where everyone has gone.

Long Explanation

The construction '~것 같다' is used in Korean to express a guess or inference about a situation. The speaker uses it when they have some evidence or basis for their inference, even if the situation is not directly observable. It is equivalent to saying 'seems like' or 'appears to be' in English.
