Expressing Cause/Reason (~니까/아서/어서/으니)

Used to express the reason or cause; 'because', 'since'.

Formation

Verb stem + (으)니까 / (으)아서/어서 / (으)니

Examples

그는 항상 열심히 공부하니까 TOPIK 시험을 쉽게 패스할 것 같아요.

Geuneun hangsang yeolsimhi gongbuhani TOPIK siheomeul swipge paeseuhal geot gatayo.

Because he always studies hard, I think he will easily pass the TOPIK exam.

여행을 가고 싶었는데, 돈이 없어서 가지 못했어요.

Yeohaengeul gago sip-eossneunde, don-i eobseoseo gaji mothaesseoyo.

I wanted to travel, but I couldn't go because I didn't have money.

그는 병가를 냈으니 회사에 안 왔네요.

Geuneun byonggareul naesseuni hoesa-e an watneyo.

He didn't come to the office because he took a sick leave.

비가 내려서 외출을 취소했어요.

Bi-ga naeryeoseo oechureul chwisohaesseoyo.

I cancelled going out because it was raining.

Long Explanation

In Korean, various grammatical patterns such as ~니까, ~아서/어서, and ~으니 are used to indicate the cause or reason for an action or situation. They are equivalent to 'because' or 'since' in English and are used to logically connect two clauses. They can be used in both positive and negative contexts.
