Detailed Grammar notes:
Processing keyword: ~上に (〜ue ni)
The grammar point ~上に (〜うえに) is a conjunction in Japanese that means "in addition to", "on top of", or "moreover". It is used to express that something has not only one attribute or situation but also another, often amplifying the statement's overall meaning.
The structure of ~上に is used to connect two clauses where the second clause adds more information to the first clause. [Clause 1]+上に、[Clause 2]
Verb Form | Example |
---|---|
Plain form + 上に | 行く 上に |
い-adjective + 上に | 忙しい 上に |
な-adjective + な上に | 便利な 上に |
Noun + の上に | 学生の 上に |
While both ~上に and ~だけでなく indicate addition, ~上に often carries an implication that the added information intensifies the situation, either positively or negatively.
