与 (yǔ) - And, with
Processing keyword: 与 (yǔ) - And, with
The Chinese character 与 (yǔ) is commonly used to connect nouns or phrases, expressing the meaning of "and" or "with." It plays a vital role in sentence construction, especially when listing items or indicating companionship.
与 (yǔ) is used in formal contexts to connect nouns in a list or to express a relationship between two entities. While it can sometimes be interchangeable with 和 (hé), 与 is more formal and is often used in written language, official documents, or speeches.
Example Structure:
我与你 (Wǒ yǔ nǐ) - I and you
Phrase Structure | Example | Translation |
---|---|---|
Subject + 与 + Object | 我与朋友 | I and my friend |
Subject + 与 + Verb + Object | 他与她学习中文 | He and she study Chinese |
与 (yǔ) vs. 和 (hé):
Using 与 (yǔ) indicates a level of formality and respect. In formal situations or when talking to someone of higher status, it can be more appropriate to use 与 instead of 和 to demonstrate politeness.
In a formal letter, you might use 与 when referring to stakeholders, whereas in a casual conversation with friends, 和 would be more common.
