Detailed Grammar notes:
Processing keyword: A。ちなみに B。(A. Chinamini B.)
In this lesson, we'll explore the Japanese conjunction 「ちなみに」(chinamini), which translates to "by the way" or "incidentally" in English. This expression is used to add related information to a conversation without changing the topic entirely. Mastering 「ちなみに」 will help you make your Japanese conversations smoother and more natural.
「ちなみに」 is used to introduce additional information that is related to the previous statement. It allows the speaker to add a side note or extra detail without disrupting the flow of the conversation.
The basic structure using 「ちなみに」 is as follows:
A。ちなみに B。
Component | Role | Example |
---|---|---|
A | Initial statement | 明日は休みです。 |
ちなみに | Conjunction ("by the way") | ちなみに |
B | Related additional information | 天気予報は晴れですね。 |
Expression | Meaning | Usage |
---|---|---|
ちなみに | By the way | Adds related info to the same topic. |
ところで | By the way | Introduces a new, often unrelated topic. |
それに | Moreover | Adds additional information of importance. |
しかも | Furthermore | Emphasizes additional surprising info. |
今回のプロジェクトは成功しました。ちなみに、次のプロジェクトは来月から始まります。
Konkai no purojekuto wa seikō shimashita. Chinamini, tsugi no purojekuto wa raigetsu kara hajimarimasu.
Translation:
"This project was a success. By the way, the next project starts from next month."
昨日映画を見たよ。ちなみに、その映画はとても面白かった。
Kinō eiga o mita yo. Chinamini, sono eiga wa totemo omoshirokatta.
Translation:
"I watched a movie yesterday. By the way, that movie was very interesting."
今日は誕生日です。ちなみに、ケーキは自分で作りました。
Kyō wa tanjōbi desu. Chinamini, kēki wa jibun de tsukurimashita.
Translation:
"Today is my birthday. Incidentally, I made the cake myself."
この製品は日本で生産されています。ちなみに、材料はすべて国産です。
Kono seihin wa Nihon de seisan sarete imasu. Chinamini, zairyō wa subete kokusan desu.
Common Mistake: Confusing 「ちなみに」 with 「ところで」.
明日はテストです。ところで、勉強しましたか?
Ashita wa tesuto desu. Tokoro de, benkyō shimashita ka?
This suggests changing the topic, which might seem abrupt.明日はテストです。ちなみに、勉強しましたか?
Ashita wa tesuto desu. Chinamini, benkyō shimashita ka?
"Tomorrow is the test. By the way, did you study?"今日は雨ですね。____、明日は晴れるそうです。
Congratulations! You've learned how to use 「ちなみに」 to make your Japanese conversations more natural. Keep practicing by incorporating it into your daily conversations.
